Terrorism

“While we must remain determined to defeat terrorism, it isn’t only terrorism we are fighting. It’s the beliefs that motivate terrorists. A new ideology of hatred and intolerance has arisen to challenge America and liberal democracy.” – Senator John Kerry

Terrorism: Probably, one of the most hated words to ever enter the dictionary, has taken far deeper roots than we can ever imagine. There is hardly any soul on the face of the earth that does not feel its impact on our daily lives in one form or another. Governments are busy formulating plans and strategies to fight this menace, law enforcement agencies across the globe are hard at work to contain it to the best of their individual capabilities.

We, individuals, bear the brunt of such dastardly acts of the ill-advised, misguided individuals that become wilful pawns in the hands of manipulators in so many different forms. No doubt there is no dearth of religious fanatics that cross all limits of humanity to incite hatred, revolt, violence as well as unimaginably horrific acts of trampling upon the liberties of their innocent victims.

Gone are the days of high-seas piracy in its most dastardly form of the ages gone by. Though we still see random acts of these obstinate opportunists extracting huge ransom from wayfarers on the high seas. They take our commerce to ransom by holding up all sorts of merchant vessels in their quest for fabulous amounts of money. There have been a few incidents of human casualty through the course of these depraved acts of these good-for-nothing groups of criminals but that pales in comparison to the incidents of violence at mass scale that we are now experiencing at frequent intervals.

While it is fair for us common folks to expect protection from our elected government and the huge machinery at its disposal to combat crime and violence, I would strongly emphasize the need for awakening the brute force within us, the force to recognize right from wrong and between a good neighbor and the one not so good. The need of the hour is for us to change our ‘I’ minded thinking to ‘WE’ minded one. We need to be inclusive in our daily life and learn to watch our common interests rather than our own. Until and unless we treat each other with as much respect as we hold for ourselves, we may not feel the necessity to watch out for the common good.

Vigilance at the ground level can go a long way in identifying dubious characters roaming around in our midst. We can always capture telltale signs of doubtful integrity by paying more attention to our surroundings both at home and work. Our vigilant outlook in areas of mass gathering like the shopping centers, cinema halls, churches, fair grounds and other such places can forewarn us of impending trouble more often than not.

We must remember the advice Sen. Kerry gives us about fighting the beliefs and the ideology of hatred and intolerance that motivates these often young individuals that become easy pawns in hands of their master manipulators with no personal gain but a sure death. Majority of these terrorists have fallen prey to a self-centered doctrine of getting all the unimaginable luxuries of life upon death. What they could never imagine possible in life, the exact same luxuries motivate them to die. Does anyone know of a dead person enjoying any luxuries anywhere?

Brainwashing individuals to the extremities of horrific actions is the expertise majority of the manipulators employ to increase their ranks of active agents willing to wreak havoc in the most unexpected surroundings. Their ruthless actions are prompted by the immense hate so deeply ingrained into these foolish, utterly despicable zealots that know of no other avenues to use their mental faculties. Is it any wonder we see more and more depraved acts of mass murder of innocent, law-abiding individuals.

I believe it is time we, the individuals, take up cudgels and unite in our own little spheres to form Block Committees that help keep a closer eye on our individual neighborhood more than ever before. We need to watch out for new residents taking up residence in our vicinity and observe their pattern for any suspicious activities, routines, visitors, interaction or lack thereof and so on and so forth. Businesses need to be ever more vigilant in hiring staff only after obtaining a Police Verification, avoiding heavily crowded venues by changing our own pattern.

Another great move on our part can come in the form of promoting and attending inter-racial gatherings. Such an uninhibited move will help send out a strong message to the future generations, to our growing youngsters, the future leaders, that we are a tolerant society where equal opportunities are available to one and all irrespective of caste, creed, color or religion.

So long as we initiate wilful acts of inclusiveness to welcome various minorities, religious groups and block leaders to adapt to the mainstream without inhibitions, we can start building a more terror-resistant generation for the future.

Our job, under the current circumstances, is to curb the evil influences from taking deeper roots and snatch away from our midst the easily gullible generation of youngsters by promising them a lavish lifestyle and all sorts of relief from the imaginary ‘oppressive’ approach of the rest of the society. We must infuse the young with faith in the system by setting examples of collaborative growth.

End of racism, as far as possible, could be one of the most effective tools in this quest though it may be harder to apply. Unless we try, we will never know. Assimilation of the growing minorities into the mainstream can propel us together on the course of hegemony beyond any corrective measures after the fact.

The liberal values that we take for granted in the Western society have come to be a major irritant in the oppressive regime of so many disgruntled communities elsewhere. To add insult to injury, their self-styled, often barely educated leaders use all possible techniques to discredit the forward-looking societies. They go all out to hammer into the minds of their followers the feelings of hapless victims. It helps them gain larger followings. It becomes much easier for these anti-social elements to sow the seeds of discontent and continued oppression in the innocent minds of children and young adults. This is where they find new recruits to be used as willing tools of mass murder at the cost of their own lives.

In order to root out terrorism, we MUST first root out these religious fanatics from the face of the earth. Pluck and destroy the roots rather than gathering the huge amount of ‘leaves’ in the shape of individual terrorists. Give something worthwhile to the future recruits to wean them away from this path of no return.

“Nip the evil in the bud” by checking the growth of terror camps from the face of the earth. Give them exemplary punishment as a consequence for disrespecting innocent lives. Above all else, beware of your surroundings, in all possible respects at all times.
